Slewing problems with North / South moving in opposite intended direction

I have several issues. Going to attack them one at a time. When I connect to the mount and get NINA up and running, I first slew North, the mount slews north. I then press North again and the mount slews south. If I then press South, the mount may move south, or it may move north. There is no pattern. What’s up?
EDIT: When I first slew North, the mount moves north. If I attempt a North slew again, the mount slews south. But if I turn on ‘reverse secondary’ in NINA, the mount operates correctly, until I hit the home command. Then the mount goes back to acting in the original wrong way. If I turn off ‘reverse secondary’ and turn it back on, the mount starts operating correctly. What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: WarpAstron Support says this is normal. Whoever came up with that as being the way it should work should be out having a hard time finding a job.

Hi,

As our mounts use OnStep system. OnStep will consider NCP as true north in coordinates of GEM mode. So DEC movement near the NCP will be act differently from north of Alt/Az coordinates.

Once mount pointing off the NCP a bit, the direction will be change. Refer to detailed explanations in FAQ of OnStep Wiki, this will not impact normal movement of the mount.

For mount went back and forward like oscillation, it possibly due to AEB protection triggered, as AEB (Automatic Emergency Brake, for collision protection) default threshold could be too low for larger OTA/load, you can follow the AEB tuning guide to adjust this parameter to higher value to avoid this happened.

I too have found the same behavior with my very new WD-20. I have not used it yet under clear sky as I am still testing and configuring the OTA and it’s accessories in my shed. However it only seems to be with the north/south buttons. I have not read the document WarpAstron tech referred to yet which purports to explain this odd behavior but I have never seen that kind of behavior in any other mount and it is not acceptable. Pressing N should always cause motion in one same direction every time ditto for the S key. I’ll bet there will be a software update some time soon (I hope) to fix that. Hopefully it only happens using the hand pad, and hope NINA slews always works properly, which remains to be seen for me. Hopefully I will get to testing it under a real sky some night next week.

Yep! My thoughts too, that N should turn to the right as seen from the rear and S vice versa. Apparently this odd behavior has been the way OnStep works since the beginning of OnStep. I now consider it a small annoyance. If you are planning to use the mount as equatorial, you may want to look at the settings under the thread, ‘Terrible Guiding’. @G_S has posted them and they are a good starting point.

This behaviour is also present in other mount such as Pegasus astro NYX101. It is counterintuitive, but you get use to it. I think it might be a OnStep thing, but would need confirmation about it. Basically the N button will bring your DEC North whether the scope is east or west, and S to south . If your OTA is east and you push continuously on N, it will pass polaris, and go all the way to south, but if you release it and push N again it will go north. Just keep an eye on where your OTA is aiming and you’ll get the hang of it. It is not a simple left to right or right to left thing. Just the way it works.
